The SmartEdge project delivers a validated, innovative, end-to-end framework for semantic-driven
edge intelligence, enabling the design, deployment, and orchestration of distributed applications
across heterogeneous edge–cloud environments. The solution integrates semantic modelling,
dynamic swarm networking, and low-code programming paradigms to address the increasing
complexity of data-intensive, latency-critical applications in domains such as automotive,
manufacturing, and healthcare.

SmartEdge introduces a semantic abstraction layer based on knowledge graphs (KGs) that unifies
heterogeneous data sources, device capabilities, and network conditions into a machine-interpretable
representation. This enables domain experts to define system behaviour declaratively, while the
platform automatically translates high-level intents into optimized distributed execution workflows.
This paradigm significantly reduces development complexity and enhances adaptability in dynamic
environments.

The innovative SmartEdge solution has been validated through six industrial use cases spanning three
major domains: (i) intelligent transportation systems (ADAS testing and V2X communication), (ii)
smart manufacturing (robotics, anomaly detection, and production interoperability), and (iii) digital
health (personal virtual assistants and rehabilitation systems).

UC1 – Smart Vehicle Test Case Generation for ADAS

This use case addresses the scalability and complexity of validating advanced driver-assistance
systems (ADAS). SmartEdge enables the transformation of heterogeneous sensor data (e.g.,
LiDAR, video, geospatial data) into semantic representations of traffic scenes, which are used
to automatically generate structured and replayable test scenarios. The system leverages
edge swarms of sensing and processing nodes to collect, synchronize, and enrich distributed
data, enabling large-scale scenario generation with high realism. This approach improves
coverage of rare and safety-critical edge cases while significantly reducing testing time and
cost.

UC2 – Smart Vehicle-to-Infrastructure

UC2 demonstrates SmartEdge in vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) environments, enabling real
time data exchange between vehicles and roadside units. The platform supports dynamic
swarms of vehicles and infrastructure nodes, where data is processed and fused at the edge
to provide low-latency situational awareness. Semantic interoperability ensures consistent
interpretation of events across heterogeneous systems, while swarm coordination enables
cooperative decision-making and improved traffic safety. The solution reduces
communication overhead and enhances responsiveness in complex urban scenarios.

UC3 – Smart Factory Mobile Robotics

This use case validates SmartEdge in the context of industrial mobile robotics, where fleets of
autonomous robots operate in dynamic production environments. The system enables
swarm-based coordination of robots, allowing them to share data, distribute tasks, and adapt
to changing conditions in real time. Edge processing supports low-latency decision-making,
while semantic models enable consistent interpretation of operational context across devices.
The result is improved efficiency, flexibility, and robustness in automated manufacturing
workflows.

UC4 – Smart Factory: Low-code Edge Intelligence

UC4 focuses on the application of semantic low-code programming tools to industrial edge
environments. SmartEdge enables the orchestration of heterogeneous device swarms,
including machines, sensors, and control systems, through declarative workflows. The
platform supports real-time data analytics, interoperability across different standards, and
dynamic adaptation of production processes. This significantly reduces development effort
while enabling flexible and scalable deployment of edge intelligence in manufacturing.

UC5A – Smart Healthcare with Personal Virtual Assistants

This use case applies SmartEdge to personalized healthcare services, focusing on virtual
assistants that interact with users in real time. The system relies on distributed swarms of
edge devices and services to process multimodal user data locally, ensuring low latency and
privacy preservation. Semantic integration enables context-aware assistance, while swarm
coordination supports the seamless interaction of multiple components, including sensors,
user interfaces, and backend services.

UC5B – Smart Health Rehabilitation

This use case addresses digital rehabilitation services, where patient monitoring and feedback
must be delivered in real time. SmartEdge enables coordinated swarms of sensing and
processing nodes to track patient activity and generate adaptive feedback based on semantic
interpretation of movement and health data. The system supports personalized therapy,
continuous monitoring, and improved responsiveness, enhancing both the effectiveness and
scalability of rehabilitation processes.
